Cartagena photographs well because it is compact, bright and built on hills. Here are the spots worth planning around on a port day.
Concepción castle terrace
The single best view in the city. From the terrace you look straight down on the harbour, the cruise berth and your own ship, with the fortified headlands framing the bay behind. Late morning light is best; by mid-afternoon you are shooting into the sun.
The Roman Theatre viewpoint
From the street above the theatre you get the whole seating bowl in one frame, with the ruined cathedral apse on one side and the harbour behind. No ticket needed for this angle.
Plaza del Ayuntamiento
The white marble town hall is one of the finest modernist buildings in Spain, and the triangular square in front of it gives you room to fit it in. It is also where the harbour promenade meets Calle Mayor, so it works as an orientation shot.
Calle Mayor
Narrow, marble-paved and lined with glass balconies, this street is at its best in the morning when it is still shaded and quiet. The Casino façade and Casa Cervantes are the two to look for.
The Peral submarine
An unusual foreground: a polished steel submarine hull from 1888 with the modern harbour behind it. Works better than you would expect, and it is a two-minute walk from the ship.
Muralla del Mar
The sea wall gives you low, clean shots of the water with the fortifications running away from the camera. Good at the end of the day when the stone goes gold.
A note on light
Cartagena is intensely bright between 12:00 and 16:00 in summer, which flattens everything. If your call is a long one, the last hour before all-aboard is usually the best light of the day — the warm tone you see across the photographs on this site is the real colour of the city in late afternoon.
Practical tips
Bring a strap if you are on wheels, use the castle lift if the climb looks long, and keep an eye on the time: the shots you want most are on the hill, and the hill is the furthest point of any route.
