No group of ours leaves for the city until every single rider has completed the initial training. It is not a formality and it is not rushed: it is the part of the tour we are proudest of, and the reason we have taken more than 30,000 guests around Cartagena safely.
Where the training happens
We run it on flat, closed ground next to the meeting point at the cruise terminal area, away from traffic and pedestrians. You put on a helmet and a hi-vis vest before you step onto a machine, and you keep them on for the whole tour.
How a Segway actually works
The guide explains the machine before anyone rides it: it self-balances, so it stays upright by itself. You lean gently forward to move, straighten up to stop, lean slightly back to reverse, and steer with the handlebar. There is no throttle and no brake lever to learn. We show you how to step on and off correctly, which is the only part most people get wrong at first.
The safety briefing
Before riding we go through the rules that keep the group together:
Personalised practice with every rider
Then each participant rides a short circuit with the guide beside them: starting, stopping, a wide turn, a tight turn, and a controlled dismount. We repeat it as many times as you need. Nobody is pushed onto the street because the group is waiting — we have run groups where one person took two minutes and another took fifteen, and both had the same tour.
The route briefing
Once everyone is steady, we explain the route: the harbour front, the city walls, the Roman Theatre viewpoint and the climb up to Concepción castle hill, where we stop and where the gradients are. Knowing what is coming is part of riding it comfortably.
Our safety standards
Machines are checked before every session, helmets and vests are provided and mandatory, group sizes are matched to the number of guides, speed is limited to a guided pace, and we hold full public liability insurance as a licensed operator in the Region of Murcia. If conditions are unsafe, we reschedule.
Requirements
If you decide not to ride
If after the training you would rather not continue, that is fine and it is your call. We would always rather have that conversation on the training ground than on the street.
If you are coming into Cartagena on a cruise, our Segway tour is built around your ship's departure time — we will reply to your request as soon as possible.
